Mediation charges

Who pays for mediation?

The cost of mediation is usually shared between the parties. In some cases, the parties agree that one will pay the costs – this often happens in mediations involving complaints against organisations or public authorities. This will need to be agreed before the mediation.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge for initial enquiries, which usually involve an email exchange or phone discussion up to 15 minutes to explain mediation and answer any questions.

For more in-depth consultations of up to 90 minutes, I charge £95.

Where both parties agree to proceed to mediation, I charge a fixed fee of £750 per full (8-hour) day or £400 per half day (up to 4 hours). This includes up to 2 hours of preparation, which usually involves telephone discussions and emails with the parties. I do not charge VAT.

If more preparation is required, depending on the number of participants and the complexity of the case, I charge £75 per hour for additional preparation.

I will inform parties if the total mediation charges, includig preparation, are likely to go beyond the fixed fee quoted above.

It is possible to hold mediation in person, by videoconference (Zoom) and by telephone conference call.

Are there other costs?

Where the meeting is in person, and travel outside London is involved, I also charge for my travel expenses and travel time. Where I am arranging and booking a mediation venue, refreshments and other facilities for the mediation, I charge for these expenses.

I explain all the charges in a letter of engagement which is signed by the paying party/ies before the mediation. Let me know if you’d like to see this when deciding whether or not to commission me as your mediator.
